The Gibson Custom Shop 1930s L-00 True Vintage guitar first appeared with other True Vintage models around 2007 and was built in occasional batches until 2016.
The Gibson L-00 first appeared in 1931 with its catalog debut in 1932, and stayed in production into the mid-'40s with wartime pressures ending its run. It was then replaced by the modernized LG series, the LG-1, LG-2 and LG-3. As with most other spruce-top guitars, the replacements used Sitka Spruce tops as Adirondack Red Spruce had been over-harvested for war materiel, particularly in airframes. Recovery of the Red Spruce took over half a century.
This Gibson Custom Shop 1930s L-00 True Vintage example dates to June 10, 2012 and was built at Bozeman, Montana. It is in good, clean condition with minor wear marks to the finish and light to moderate fret wear, primarily in the first to third frets under the top strings. A K&K Pure Mini 3-element passive transducer set has been added to the bridge plate and is wired directly to an endpin jack.
There is a noticeable departure from stock: The neck finish was stripped while the neck was shaved down to a more modern 'V' profile and comfortable size. This process retained the front of head finish and logo, while the back of the head was finished black into the shape of a pointed 'stinger'.
Sold with the original TKL Made in Canada, black hard shell Gibson Acoustic branded case.
Materials and Construction
On introduction in 1931, the Gibson L-00 paired an Adirondack Spruce top with a body and neck of Honduran Mahogany. The fingerboard and bridge was Rosewood, at the time sourced from Brazil.
The neck profile was typically very full and V shaped.
As a True Vintage model, Hot Hide Glue was used wherever possible during construction. The finish is a nitrocellulose lacquer sunburst - the only finish available as stock - with a VOS treatment, taking it away from its original gloss.
Hardware was very simple - a set of strip mounted open gear tuners with creme plastic buttons. On this re-creation, the tuners are made by Gotoh and very much look the part.
