Here is a definitive rarity - a Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Special Double Cut built as a display model for the 2020 Winter NAMM Show. Along with the highest attention to detail as a showpiece, this great guitar features a flat figured maple top hidden under a Classic White VOS finish and a pair of Custombuckers.
The Les Paul Special appeared in 1955 as a single cutaway slab-bodied, entry level version of the Les Paul. At this point it used a pair of P-90 pickups and a wraparound, stop-tail bridge. In mid 1958, it received the double-cutaway body providing unrestricted access to the fretboard. The combination of tune-a-matic bridge and stop tailpiece appeared on a 1976 reissue.
Not only a showpiece, this is a very good, well made and well finished instrument. It is very well balanced and plays smoothly and cleanly.
Sold with its original brown hard shell case with Gibson plaque, containing the COA and several pages printed from the likely original seller of the guitar, Walt Grace Vintage Cars and Guitars in Miami, Florida. The COA booklet specifies that the guitar was a display guitar for the 2020 Winter NAMM Show, and as such may show some signs of use by fans and artists who were encouraged to try it.
Materials and Construction
This guitar moves somewhat away from the original Les Paul Special configuration. In addition to the use of Mahogany for the set neck and slab body, a figured Maple top was added to the body. The top edge of the body has two-layer binding. The head plate is dyed Holly. A Classic White finish was then applied, with a VOS treatment to both the finish and hardware. The bound fingerboard is Indian Rosewood with Mother of Pearl used for the dot position markers and the Gibson logo while the Les Paul Special marking is the usual screened gold.
Hardware starts with a set of Grover Roto-Matic and a non-wired Tune-a-matic bridge and stop tailpiece set. The pickguard still has its original 'Gibson Custom' sticker.
The electronics do follow the classic pattern. A pair of P-90 pickups feed to individual volume and tone controls, a three-way switch, and side-mounted output jack.
