DESCRIPTION:
Built as part of a production run on offer from 2020 to 2025, this Gibson Custom 1936 Advanced Jumbo acoustic guitar dates to October 3,2021 and recreates one of Gibson's lesser known but very influential models.
This example is in very good, clean and all original condition with vanishingly light wear. While it has apparently had very little playing time, it has a full, rich and evenly balanced tone with plenty of projection. It is in short an extremely good sounding guitar.
Construction and Condition
The Gibson Custom 1936 Advanced Jumbo has a 16 inch wide, round shoulder dreadnought body pairing a torrefied Red or Adirondack Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, bridge and bound fingerboard. The body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany. The bridge style is rectangular, with the saddle 'cut through' as was standard at the time. The two Mother of Pearl dots bracketing the bridge pins cover a pair of small locating bolts. The scale length is longer than Gibson normally used, at 25.3 inches (643mm) and the fingerboard width at the nut is 1.76 inches (44.72mm).
The fingerboard and headstock inlays are a distinctive and almost unique Mother of Pearl Diamonds and Arrows set, with a Mother of Pearl script Gibson logo at the head.
The finish is a Vintage Sunburst in nitrocellulose lacquer. While it is technically a gloss , it is thin with the look and feel of a 1930's finish. The pickguard is a 'Firestripe' style, common from the mid 1930's into the early 1940's.
Hardware is simple. There is a set of Waverly open-gear 'butterbean' tuners at the head, and no pickups or electronics.
The hard shell case is not original, and contains the Certificate of Authenticity, truss rod adjustment tool, and key ring.
Model History
The Advanced Jumbo was introduced in 1935 as an upgrade to the Jumbo, Gibson's first round shouldered dreadnought and predecessor to following models like the J-35 and J-45. The Jumbo was built for only two years, 1934 to 1936. Approximately three hundred Advanced Jumbo models were built until it was itself replaced by the Super Jumbo J-200 in 1940.
The advent of WWII significantly reduced guitar production, and Gibson focused on the J-45, the SJ or Southern Jumbo, and the LG series. A very few J-200 models were built at the start of the war.
The word 'Advanced' ultimately seems to be a marketing term indicating upgraded appointments, advancing beyond the previous models. This is particularly the case with the use of Rosewood instead of Mahogany for the back and sides. While some feel that it's also a reference to a 'forward shifting' of the X-braces towards the sound hole, catalog materials of the time seldom mention bracing patterns.
While the Gibson Custom 1936 Advanced Jumbo hews closely to the specifications of the original models, there are some differences, primarily in the Rosewoods for the fingerboard and bridge. With the 1935 introduction of this model, Gibson shifted from using Brazilian to Indian Rosewood for back and sides; however, Brazilian was still used for fingerboards and bridges until the mid 1960's. On all reissues, only Indian Rosewood is used.
