This Gibson B-45 12 12-String Acoustic Guitar dates to later 1965 at Kalamazoo Michigan and is in overall good to very good condition. It has no cracks or breaks, has good action and a full, rich sound. The sunburst finish has an amount of natural and expected lacquer checking. The trapeze tailpiece has been replaced with what looks to be an identical model, but aside from that the guitar appears to be completely original, and is sold with its original arched top black case with black finish and orange interior.
During the 1960's, the Gibson B-45 12 was the top of the line for Gibson 12 string steel string acoustic guitars. These were the guitar of choice for a number of artists, including Gordon Lightfoot who used 1963, 1967 and 1970's models.
In addition, Lightfoot also used a 1962 B-25 12 N (N for Natural top). Later he also used a 1982 Guild F-412, a 1982 Ovation 12, and a 2007 Seagull Maritime 12.
Built from 1961 to 1979, the B-45 12 briefly used a round (or slope) shouldered dreadnought sized body for about 100 instruments. In 1962 this was switched to a Martin-style Square shoulder design, like the Hummingbird; the J-45 and J-50 kept their round-shouldered bodies until 1969. The top is Sitka Spruce, paired with solid Central American Mahogany for the sides, back, and neck, with Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. &Until 1969, that meant Brazilian Rosewood.
Inside, the bridge plate is a relatively thick section of Maple Laminate. From its introduction, these models had height-adjustable saddles, either Rosewood or for ceramic depending on year and model. Regardless of material, these saddles used a pair of carrier / support bolts at the ends, which thread into anchors that go through the top and bridge plate and have a fairly large nut - close to a half inch - on the inside. The anchors were installed to the top before the bridge was glued in place. The bridges used were traditional 'Pin' style units except for a period from 1963 to later 1967 when a trapeze tailpiece and narrower, non-pin bridge were added.
