Since it's become somewhat difficult to obtain an original 1959 Gibson Les Paul, the Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue or R9 has become a good substitute.
This 2013 Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue in Washed Cherry Burst is in very good condition, and comes with the original case, Certificate of Authenticity and hang tags. It has only very minor wear. These instruments come with the hardware slightly 'antiqued' - they're not beaten up as a 'relic' would be, but instead the tints are faded and the nickel hardware has some natural tarnish.
At just over 8 pounds, this is one of the lighter Les Pauls I've seen lately and it is remarkably comfortable. The figuring on the top is nicely set off by the washed-out cherry sunburst. It's very nice to play, hear, and to look at!
Materials and Construction
The Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue is based closely on existing 1959 models, with a lot of attention given to construction techniques and glues, carefully reproduced PAF-style custombucker pickups, and aniline-dye tinted nitrocellulose lacquer finishes strongly evoking the original colour schemes. The top is bookmatched figured Maple on a one-piece Mahogany back. The neck is also Mahogany, with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard. The truss rod is Gibson's traditional single-action.
Hardware includes a set of single-line Kluson Deluxe style tuners with press-fit bushings, a wired ABR-1 bridge and lightweight stop tailpiece.
The electronics start with a set of Alnico 3 Custombuckers. These lead to CTS 500K Audio Taper pots for volume and tone, with paper-in-oil caps for the tone controls. The three-position toggle switch and output jack are by Switchcraft.
The serial number is 9 3651, breaking down as a 1959 reissue, the 3rd year in the decade, and production number 651. This system repeats every ten years so it's necessary to look further to determine the decade of production. In this case, it's known that the 2003 models in this serial range had Brazilian Rosewood fingerboards like the 1950's models. This one does not, placing it in either 2013 or 2023; ownership information places it before 2023 leaving only 2013.
Here's the builder on the current Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue:
"Gibson Custom's 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue is not just a tribute to the priceless original models -- it's a clone of them. From laser-scanned dimensions to chemically-recreated plastics to color-matched shades of sunburst, every element has been rendered in unbelievable detail. It represents the culmination of decades of work by Gibson Custom's expert team -- a tireless quest to bring accuracy and authenticity to the hands of fans. It’s the definition of cool, and it's the best representation of the 1959 Les Paul Standard since Gibson Custom began making Historic Reissues over twenty-five years ago."
