Here is a classic piece – a Fender Telecaster Custom from 1978 with an original Wide Range Humbucker designed by Seth Lover. This model was produced from 1972 to 1981.
This Fender Telecaster Custom is in overall good condition, with noticeable wear to the finish. It has chips and dents primarily on the back and the colour coats are worn through on the arm-rest area of the top. The neck finish is in good condition. Fret wear is very light, with no finish buildup against the frets, suggesting a professional refret some time ago.
This is one of the heavier examples we have seen with a very dense piece of Ash for the body.
The Volume and Tone knobs are Stratocaster style. These guitars originally used the ‘Witch Hat’ knobs with set screws, found on many Fender amps but by 1977 CBS/Fender transitioned them to splined, push-on Stratocaster Volume / Tone knobs.
The bridge is a six-saddle type and the bridge cover is included. The strap pins are original.
These guitars are equipped with both the head-mounted 'Bullet' truss rod adjuster and three-bolt MicroTilt neck joint, which had appeared the previous year on the Stratocaster.
The guitar plays well overall, and could readily be set up to a player’s preferences.

About the Fender Telecaster Customs
The 1972 Fender Telecaster Custom was a significant reworking of the 1959-1972 Custom. The original Custom was an upscale version of the classic Tele using the same hardware but with a double-bound body and a Rosewood fingerboard, which had just made its debut on the new Jazzmaster.
The goal of the 1972 Fender Telecaster Custom was to provide a guitar with a humbucker to compete with Gibson. To this end, the R&D team with legendary pickup designer Seth Lover added a brand-new humbucker in the neck position, three way toggle switch, and individual volume and tone controls. The Tele Custom was used by a number of prominent guitarists, including Keith Richards and The Edge.
A key factor in the rarity of this model is that the Wide Range Humbucker, designed for Fender by Seth Lover, used CuNiFe magnets (made of Copper, Nickel and Iron), shaped into the adjustable polepieces. CuNiFe was hard to work in this manner, making the pickups expensive; as well, CuNiFe manufacture basically ended, prohibiting further production in the original design. Still, it is often regarded as one of the best-sounding, most articulate pickups available.
