Presented here is a very good, Blonde Fender Telecaster all original 1974 translucent with some finish reaction from tape on the back.
The original owner did make a small modification to the knobs: a piece of paper with a red mark on one end was fixed to the top of the chrome knob to provide a visual indication of where the pot is in its rotation.
This wonderful mid-1970s example falls squarely into 'Closet Classic' condition, showing virtually no play wear to the frets or finish. The original metal hardware is entirely free of corrosion, though the Schaller-made 'F-stamped' tuners are somewhat stiff. These tuners could possibly be re-lubricated to restore smooth action; otherwise, direct drop-in exact replacements are readily available from Fender.
The back of the headstock still has a sticker from The Hi-Note music store in Oakville, Ontario. That shop is long gone now but was a prominent fixture of the local music scene for several decades. Extremely well preserved, this sticker is a wonderful item establishing provenance and marking Canadian retail music history.
The included hard case is original to the guitar and is what collectors refer to as a 'Distributor' case. At the time, Canadian import duties on luggage (including instrument cases) were designed to protect domestic manufacturers. As a result, Fender shipped guitars directly to Canada without cases, and the local distributor supplied a locally made case — hence the lack of a Fender logo. This case includes a strap and the 'Ashtray' bridge cover.
Fender Telecaster Materials and Construction
The consistency in materials use and construction methods illustrates just how closely the Telecaster adheres to Leo Fender's original Broadcaster design. The body is Ash, a single-piece Maple neck with truss rod mounted from the back and covered by a Walnut 'Skunk Stripe' and headstock plug is bolted to it. As with the original design and layout, the bridge and electronics are mounted to the top of the guitar.
The finish is in very good, clean condition with slight marring and discoloration on the back and lower back bass bout edge. At this point the finish materials were entirely polyester, with the exception of a small amount of nitrocellulose lacquer sprayed on the headstock front over the decal. This materials choice was to prevent the poly finishes from damaging the decals.
Overall this is a wonderful, very well preserved piece of music history and ready for another half century of use!
