This Fender Strat Plus Deluxe electric guitar in a beautiful Blue Pearl Dust finish and Rosewood fingerboard dates to 1991 at the recently opened Corona, California plant. It is in good clean condition with light wear to the finish and light to moderate fret wear. It's definitely been played over the last 34 years, but also taken care of.
A non-original teardrop shaped hardshell case is included and contains the trem arm.
Offered from 1987 to to 1999 and based on the American Standard series, the Strat Plus and Fender Strat Plus Deluxe models were top of the Stratocaster line. The Jeff Beck signature models follow closely the Strat Plus concept. These guitars were some of the first new instruments from the revitalized Fender, and tend to be very good.
Construction and Materials
Built in the tradition of Leo Fender's original design, the Fender Strat Plus Deluxe pairs an Alder body with a Maple neck capped with a Rosewood fingerboard. These necks have subtle but meaningful upgrades, having a 22nd fret extension and a Bi-Flex truss rod.
Several major features differentiated the Strat Plus and Plus Deluxe models from the American Standard:
- Wilkinson Roller Nut
- Schaller or Sperzel Locking tuners - Schaller in this Case
- Lace Sensor noise resistant pickups
- TBX Tone Control
- Factory installed HipShot TremSetter
The neck / body joint includes an upgraded, four bolt version of the older three-bolt MicroTilt joint. This allows very fast adjustments to the neck angle, very helpful when setting up a trem system for varying string gauges or trem movement ranges.
The trem itself was a newly developed, two-point model with larger sintered (compressed powdered metal), offset screw saddles and a punched steel bridge plate. This design is much smoother and stabler than the original six-screw model.
This is an excellent guitar in overall good condition and ready for decades more of use!
General History
On March 5 1985, CBS sold Fender to its CEO Bill Schultz, who had been brought in from Yamaha to improve Fender's lagging performance, to a group including employees and outside investors.
However, the sale did not include the Fullerton plant, fixtures, or much intellectual property. From that date until the late 1986 opening of the Corona, CA plant, production was in Japan. Changing economic conditions, particularly a rapid increase in the value of the Yen, made this arrangement unsustainable. Fender immediately sought new US facilities and a Corona plant opened in late 1986 or early 1987, with subsequent and larger plant space opening in 1988.
Because the sale had not included facilities or fixtures, new models and designs were necessary and were not tied to previous practice, making real, practical improvements easier to implement.
