Description
The Fender Mustang Bass launched in 1966 and was the last bass guitar that Leo Fender personally designed before turning the company over to CBS, and was an immediate hit. This 30-inch scale bass was targeted as a beginner, entry-level instrument but over the years has been used by a number of top tier professionals.
This early Fender Mustang Bass was built during the fall of 1966 and carries an older, professionally executed Blonde, originally white, refinish. The round-button 'Lollipop' tuners are original and specific to the 1966 - 1968 era. The design takes advantage of Fender's well proven pairing of an Alder body with a Maple neck, and here an Indian Rosewood fingerboard cap, as by this time Fender had ceased use of Brazilian Rosewood. The original plastic nut was replaced long ago with a custom made Brass nut, providing better clarity and sustain on open strings.
The hardware and electronics all bolt to the top of the guitar and the strings are routed through the back of the bridge, rather than through ferrules on the back of the body. As has happened with many of the bridges of this age, the foam mute elements were removed long ago, either from lack of use or deterioration. The original back-of-head strap pin has been removed, as has one mounted to the back of the heel.
As with some modern lower-tier models such as the Squier Affinity line, the body is thinner than on a 'Pro' instrument such as a P or J bass, Strat or Tele. And like the 1957 Precision Bass, the electronics are based on a two-element hum-cancelling pickup, followed by simple passive volume and tone controls, and an output jack.
Short scale basses have proven themselves on professional stages and recording studios. For home or casual use, they have a distinct advantage of smaller size and weight.
