Description
Here is very good condition is a Fender Custom Shop 1955 Precision Bass Relic in black finish, team built after June of 2008 at Corona, California. All the covers are included! This model appeared from 2003 to 2011.
While the 'Relic' concept alters what 'condition' means, this bass is strung with flatwounds, plays very well and has no significant play wear. Virtually all of the wear is from the 'Relic' process including the fingerboard finish wear. Fret wear is light, the parts are tightly mounted and there are no structural issues.
This bass is sold without case, but we have a hard shell and gig bag cases available.
Dating This Instrument
While there is no firm date written or stamped anywhere on the guitar, several items place it. There are no builder's signatures, so this is a 'Team Built' example, not a 'Master Built'.
The bridge plate is stamped with serial number 2621, and the base of the neck heel (not the end) has XN2621 written on it. The XN prefix was used by the Custom Shop from 2004 to 2010, and the 2621 on both parts mean they are a factory match. In the neck pocket, the number "10885900-1" appears twice. This is a Custom Shop internal production work order reference.
There is an ROHS sticker on the underside of the control plate, and this sticker starts to appear in 2007.
This takes us to the pot codes, which read “019066 1Meg AUD 0822 CTS”. The 0822 translates to 2008, and the 22 is the week number, here May 26, 2008 to June 1, 2008.
All of these factors place the bass's assembly into the middle of 2008.
Construction and Materials
As the name suggests, the Fender Custom Shop 1955 Precision Bass mostly aims to reproduce the early 1955 version. The neck is one-piece Maple with the Walnut 'Skunk Stripe' covering the truss rod channel, and the body is Ash - this is clearly visible in the neck pocket.
This version differs from the ground-breaking original 1951 model in several ways, some more visible than others. Both versions have very visible differences from the 1957 split-pickup version.
The 1951 - 1954 models most visibly had a slab Ash body with no contours, like the Telecaster. In 1954 the Stratocaster was launched, and both the comfort contours and the rounder body edges were adopted into the Precision Bass. With the contours, a Sunburst finish was offered over an Alder body, but the Butterscotch finish over Ash was still available. Custom colours like the Black seen here weren't really available until 1956.
At the same time, the black Bakelite pickguard was changed to a white single-layer plastic. In the earlier parts of the year, the pickup polepieces are flat to the bobbin top, but later in the year were staggered for better string balance.
In earlier 1955 versions, the serial number was stamped on the bridge plate, but later in that year moved to the neck plate. The bridge saddles also shifted that year from Fibre saddles to steel, two per string like the Telecaster.
In 1957, the Precision Bass reached what would be its form for the next two decades or more, with the addition of the hum-cancelling split pickup and revised pick guard.
