Description
The Fender American Vintage '62 Stratocaster in 3-Tone Sunburst, hewing closely to the original specifications, replicates a classic version of a highly influential instrument. This excellent guitar, often referred to as a '62 AVRI' pairs an Alder body with a light amber tinted nitrocellulose-finished Maple neck bearing a 'Slab' style Indian Rosewood fingerboard.
Dating to of 2009, this guitar is in overall good, original condition with very light wear and no apparent tarnish to the metal components. The light weight and distinctive 'C' shaped neck are parts of why this specific era is one of my personal favourites.
These models have an original style 3-way switch. It is a simple matter to install a 'modern' 5-way switch. The 3-way and 5-way switches are electrically and mechanically identical, the differentiating factor is an extra pair of detents stamped into the switch frame providing 'stop points' for the lever in the 'in-between' positions.
The original brown-Tolex rectangular hard shell case by G&G is included, and matches the 1962 aesthetic and the condition of this guitar. The case contains the original case candy - strap, cord, trem arm and cover, hang tags and leaflets.
Introduced in 1954, the Stratocaster was Leo Fender's third major instrument in the Spanish style (which refers to how the guitar is held) rather than lap or console steel guitars. The first was what became the Telecaster, the second was the Precision Bass. The Stratocaster was intended as an advanced model carrying three pickups and Fender's new, patented 'Synchronized Tremolo'. The Stratocaster received only minor modifications before mid 1959 when, in an effort to attract Gibson customers and support the launch of the 1958 Jazzmaster, Fender added Rosewood fingerboards across the product line. The 'Slab' board, attached to the top of the neck blank after the truss rod was installed, removed the need for the walnut 'Skunk Stripe' on the back of the neck.
Fender American Vintage '62 Stratocaster Materials and Construction
The materials and construction used for the Stratocaster have changed little over the last 72 years, providing objective proof of the quality of the design decisions made by Leo Fender and his team.
Body wood choices were influenced by availability and included Alder and Ash - here it's Alder. Neck woods were always Maple, and one-piece necks also had a Black Walnut 'Skunk Stripe' to cover the rear-mounted truss rod cavity. The 'Slab Board' style neck on this 62 AVRI had the truss rod installed in the top of the neck before the fingerboard was added.
The hardware, too, follows the original pattern of early models, with the addition of the three-layer 'mint green' pickguard. Earlier single layer pickguards had a tendency to warp over time, and these multi-layer guards with more screws were an attempt to reduce that effect. The electronics are largely bolted directly to the pickguard, making factory assembly faster and easier. The pickups are American Vintage Single-Coil Strat models, which feed to the pickup selector, and neck and middle pickup tone controls tapped off the switch. The bridge pickup does not get a tone control. The master volume control is the last part before the output jack.
The tuners are the same Kluson Deluxe design with the Safe-T-Post that Fender used on other models.
The 'Synchronized Tremolo' (in reality, 'Vibrato') bridge is exactly the 1954 design with no improvements - those come later, with the two-post models in the mid-late 1980's. The term 'Synchronized Tremolo' means that the saddles and the tremolo mechanism move as one unit, distinct from the separate bridge and tailpiece designs by Bigsby or Kaufmann.
