Description
Here we're looking at a Ernie Ball Music Man Albert Lee HH Tremolo Rosewood Neck in sunburst, built during 2012 in San Luis Opisbo, California. These are distinctive and very versatile instruments, well worth considering.
Construction and Condition
This model is offered in several configurations. Pickups can be chosen from dual humbuckers to three single coils of various types, and most single coil models come with EBMM's active Silent Circuit to eliminate 60-cycle hum.
This Ernie Ball Music Man Albert Lee HH pairs a Mahogany body and solid Indian Rosewood neck. The body has a 'Red Black' gloss sunburst poly finish, and the neck has EBMM's preferred gloss poly finish for the headstock front and back, but Tru-Oil and Gunstock wax for the rest of the neck. The truss rod adjuster is at the heel and quite easy to access without damaging the pickguard.
The body finish has a few small dents, dings and light scuffing as honest play wear, mostly around the edges. Fret wear is light to moderate. These necks are very comfortable and that extends to the entire instrument - it is well balanced and well thought out.
The pickguard and backplate are a white-black-white pearloid plastic.
Hardware and Electronics
The chrome plated hardware set begins at the head with a set of EBMM locking tuners, four on the bass side and two on the treble, making the head shorter and improving instrument balance. Next is a compensated nut, which can aid intonation on several strings.
The bridge is a Music Man two-post trem bridge set to float and it works smoothly.
This is an 'HH' guitar, so there are two humbucking pickups, a five-way selector switch, master volume and tone controls. The five-way switch is wired to offer both serial and parallel pickup modes.
Model History
The Ernie Ball Music Man Albert Lee model was first prototyped as what became the Axis model. EBMM had been working on the instrument concept for a couple of years. At the company's 1987 Christmas party, Albert Lee played and Sterling Ball showed Albert the guitar. He used it that night, took it home, and it became his main guitar. In 1993, EBMM brought it to market as the Albert Lee model.
The Axis, meanwhile, gained a different body shape and has its own success story.
