Built in Germany to update the concept of the lap steel, the Duesenberg Pomona 6 Lap Steel with MultiBender brings in features otherwise found on pedal steels, in particular a movable capo and the Multi Bender.
Built with a slab of Mahogany carrying a pair of humbucking pickups, a sliding capo and a palm-lever operated pitch-raising ‘Multi Bender’ tailpiece based on the old Bigsby Palm Pedal design, the Pomona is a fully professional grade lap steel.
This example appears to be early based on the type of front-edge Duesenberg logo – which is painted rather than part of a metal plate – but dating is difficult due to the apparent lack of a serial number. That alone indicates early production, as Duesenberg didn’t use serial numbers prior to 1995. There should be a serial number plate on the back of the head, but there is no evidence that one was ever applied.
Still, this example is in great shape and plays well. The original hard shell case is included.
Here is the builder's take on the Duesenberg Pomona 6 steel:
"I am an ancient idea modernised. Reinvented from the ground up, I give you what no one else has. I am for the ambitious minds.
The Pomona 6 is the first Duesenberg lap-steel guitar - made of solid mahogany, equipped with two humbucking pickups, an integrated capodaster and the latest version of our famous Multibender system.
The freely configurable Multibender is operated with the heel of the hand. Up to six levers (one per string) are mountable, which allow you to either raise or lower the notes on the individual strings to a preset setting.
Furthermore, the integrated capo, which runs along a track on the anodized black aluminum fretboard, enables freedom of movement between all keys without sacrificing the typical lap-steel riffs and licks that rely on open strings.
A roll nut provides tuning stability, while Duesenberg Little Toaster pickups deliver a clear and powerful sound that goes excellently well with distortion pedals or distorting amps. And the Duesenberg Speed pot controls work with a path of just 70˚ in order to achieve the lap-steel's typical swelling “wah” effects."
