DESCRIPTION:
Seen here is the late Domenic Troiano's 1964 Gibson SG Standard electric guitar. It was purchased in Toronto and used for countless performances and successful recordings with the Mandala, Bush, the James Gang, the Guess Who, the Domenic Troiano band and Black Market.
Used extensively along with his Telecaster during the Mandala and Bush years, Domenic Troiano's SG Standard was damaged during May 1971 when Bush's vehicle and trailer went off the road from Los Angeles approaching Las Vegas for a booking at the Pink Pussycat-a-Go-Go. On examining the wrecked trailer, the Telecaster's case was damaged though the guitar was fine; but while the SG's case appeared intact, the neck had broken off.
Following the Pink Pussycat shows, performed as a three-piece rather than the full complement of five, Bush returned to Los Angeles and disbanded shortly afterwards. The SG was sidelined for a time.
Domenic had already been doing session work during 1970, with The James Cotton Blues Band 'Taking Care of Business' in Los Angeles, and Randy Bachman's first solo album 'AXE' in Chicago. Following the demise of Bush, Troiano returned to Los Angeles and was able to start work on his first, self-titled album on Mercury Records
By this time, Domenic had met Neal Moser, who rewired the Telecaster to provide many previously unavailable sounds. In December of 1973, Moser was contracted by Bernardo Rico of Bernardo's Guitar Shop in Los Angeles to run the assembly shop and design electronics. Troiano's SG soon came into the shop for its neck repair, conversion to what soon became the B. C. Rich electronic layout as designed by Neal Moser, and full refinish with the addition of headstock binding. In one of the photos attached here, the Mahogany plugs carefully fitted into the original control holes are just visible, and point to the quality of the work done in that shop.
This allowed the SG back into use, and it appears on many recordings and performances, including these renditions of 'Dancin Fool' and 'Loves Me Like A Brother' written by Burton Cummings and Domenic Troiano while Domenic was a Guess Who member.
At the same time, Domenic took delivery of two of the very first 'official' B.C. Rich models, including the Seagull that he was often seen and heard playing. This helped spark interest in these revolutionary instruments.
This instrument is in good playing condition and aside from its place in Canadian music history, demonstrates the quality of the work being done by Neal Moser and Bernardo Rico in the early 1970's. This work was very influential on the guitar world, spawning many copies and competitors. Fret wear is moderate and the finish has wear from its use following the repair and refinish. The body and neck are Mahogany, and as this is a 1964 model, the fingerboard is Brazilian Rosewood. The embossed pickup covers are not original; these were introduced in late 1970 and discontinued by the end of May, 1972. The original Kluson Deluxe tuners were long ago changed to Schaller M6 models. The upper strap pin was also moved to the tip of the upper cutaway to improve balance.
The original black Gibson hard shell case is, with a number of Guess Who Backstage Pass stickers from 1974 included.
