The David Wren Studio guitar line was made during the early 1980’s as a simpler, lower-priced ‘standard production’ alternative to the rather more expensive custom order models that most builders create. Two wood selections were offered - Spruce or Cedar tops and Mahogany or Indian Rosewood back and sides.
Built during 1981, this Cedar-topped, Indian Rosewood Wren Studio is in good working condition but has had some top repairs and touchup, likely as part of a bridge removal. The label carries a note that this guitar is built for light strings only.
This guitar is well set up, has a very good neck angle, and plays well with a full, balanced and well-developed voice.
A brown hard shell case is included.
Materials and Construction
This Wren Studio model features a Red Cedar top and Indian Rosewood back, sides, head plate and bridge plate, with ebony bridge, maple binding, and a mahogany neck with bound ebony fingerboard. The body binding is Maple. The neck joint is a hybrid tenon style, with a single bolt visible through the soundhole. This style of joint makes neck resets much easier, faster and consequently less expensive.
This 1981 David Wren Studio model also has a single-element piezo pickup made by the late Brian Miller at The Twelfth Fret installed to the top at the bass side of the X brace with an endpin jack. The rest of the hardware includes Schaller tuners, a bone nut and saddle.
There is a copper foil layer on the Indian Rosewood bridge plate to allow for a pickup system bridge ground.
Now retired, David Wren built since the 1970’s, after apprenticing (like so many of Canada’s top luthiers) with Jean Larrivee. His work is very highly respected.
Many Studio models were built during David's time at The Millwheel at Yonge and Elm, which closed in the mid-1980's, after which he became a partner at The Twelfth Fret.
