This C P Thornton Classic II Nashville T Style guitar built during 2020, wears a beautiful two-tone Dark Metallic Green / Surf Green finish on torrefied woods. This is a very interesting, well built instrument featuring high quality components.
The playability, build and finish quality are excellent. Thornton spent some years working with Dana Bourgeois fretting and setting up high end guitars and knows the work well.
This is based on a 'Nashville' T-style guitar, meaning that it has an extra pickup in the middle position and the control plate is reversed, with the volume control closest to the player for quick adjustments or swells. This arrangement combines the essential T-style bridge twang and bite with the tonal versatility of the three-pickup S-style arrangement. In addition to this, the body has a front arm contour and rear 'belly cut'. This is a very comfortable instrument.
Sold with its original Access II rectangular hard shell case containing the builder's documents.
Construction and Materials
Unusually for electric models, the body is torrefied Nootka cedar, which is a cypress (Cupressus nootkatensis), not cedar. This is rather like Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata) being neither Spanish nor a cedar - it's a member of the Mahogany family (Meliaceae). Taxonomic controversies aside, this is a light weight wood that supports a full, warm tone.
C P Thornton uses torrefied Nootka cedar regularly, pairing it with a one-piece torrefied rock maple neck with Walnut 'skunk stripe' for stability, durability and to obtain balance between maple's brightness and Nootka cedar's warmth. The neck is fretted with Jescar #6150 EVO Gold wire, a medium-jumbo size.
For hardware, the head has a set of staggered post vintage style tuners by Gotoh, which remove the need for string trees. The bridge is another Gotoh part with brass compensated saddles, and this helps provide the classic twang.
The electronics are a straightforward Nashville style. The pickups are by Harmonic Design: a ChromeTone at the neck, 54 Strat in the middle, and 54 Tele model in the bridge position. The control plate is reversed, with the sequence Volume, Tone, and 5-way switch. Interestingly the knobs are un-marked Gretsch style, very friendly to the hand and a visually subtle difference.
