The Collings MT2 A-Style F-Hole Mandolin is nearly the top of the heap for A-Style mandolins alongside the Oval-hole MT2 O. The F-holes of the MT2 deliver a bit more brightness, defined attack and Bluegrass 'Chop' compared to the Oval-hole MT2 O's bass and low mid production with a warmer, open sound. The dimensions and specifications for the two versions are otherwise the same.
It's hard to find any production instrument at any price built and finished to higher standards than what comes from the Collings shops. This Collings MT2 in an unusual gloss Merlot is visually subdued but with spectacular attention to detail. The Merlot finish is carefully bordered with dark faux tortoise binding and white purfling around the instrument including top of the headstock and the bottom of the fingerboard binding which follows the end of the fingerboard.
Featuring a carved Red Spruce top and premium grade maple for the sides, carved back, sides and neck with ebony for the fingerboard, headplate and bridge, Mahogany for the linings and body blocks, and rounded off with faux tortoise binding, the Collings MT2 mandolin is an extremely attractive and well built, exceptionally good sounding, and great playing instrument.
This mandolin is finished with a high gloss, extremely well done translucent Merlot nitrocellulose lacquer finish.
Of course, the tone is all here; though this is a brand new instrument, just arrived and not at all played in, it’s got a rich, brilliant tone without any sense of brittleness or harshness. The factory setup is just as well done, and many players will find this mandolin ready to go with little or no adjustment.
