This Brian Kuzik classical guitar pairs a Western Red Cedar top with Black Walnut for the back, sides and neck, and Ebony for the bridge and fingerboard. The guitar dates to 2024, likely in August as the top is signed and dated June 27 2024 on the inside. The top right corner of the label lists the model as 'Cuatro', and is signed and dated.
Interestingly the headstock's ebony backstrap is inlaid with a section of a walnut!
Overall this guitar is in good physical and playing condition with a bit of play wear to the top. The tone is warm, well balanced and defined, with clear trebles and rich but not boomy basses. The action is at a standard height and can be easily reduced should the player wish the lighter feel or to configure the guitar for Flamenco styles.
Sold without case, but we can provide one from our stock.
Materials and Construction
As traditionally used woods like rosewood become scarcer and more expensive, alternatives such as walnut are experiencing a resurgence. Though common in instrument making until the early 1930s, walnut was largely phased out as tropical hardwoods became more accessible.
This Brian Kuzik classical guitar draws from and is constructed in Spanish building styles, with the sides slotting into the heel block rather than using a dovetail or tenon joint.
Here, the builder pairs a Spruce-braced Western Red Cedar top with Black Walnut for the sides, back, neck and the tail block. The linings are Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata), with Ebony used for the head plate, fingerboard, bridge and body binding. The top is braced in a style sometimes used by Manuel Ramirez, with a treble cut-off brace, six fans and an under-bridge plate. This is intended to provide a fuller bass with crisp trebles.
For hardware, the tuners are a Gotoh 35G1800 set with off-white plastic buttons, and bone is used for the nut, saddle and tie block edge.
The finish is a hand rubbed oil and wax combination.
