Shown here from 2001 is the William Laskin 'Film Noir' Baritone guitar featuring Koa sides and back and a Laskin Arm Rest. This long scale guitar (28.74 inches, 730mm) is pitched down a fourth, so the tuning runs 'B E A D F# B'.
The Laskin 'Film Noir' Baritone was built during early 2001 in Toronto, Ontario and like other examples is a wonderful demonstration of Laskin's skill in both guitar building and complex engraved inlays.
To encourage the rich low ends and power required for this type of instrument, the body is based on a Jumbo design with no cutaways, though it did receive the Laskin Arm Rest on the lower bass bout. This innovation makes playing much more comfortable. The top is Sitka Spruce, and the sides and back are a very nicely figured Hawaiian Koa set. The body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and fingerboard. The top purfling extends around the fingerboard tag, and the rosette includes two abalone rings.
Laskin then adds complex, custom engraved inlays. The person commissioning this Baritone instrument chose a 'Film Noir' theme. Two figures in 1940's attire, one male in silhoutette, one female in grey tones, are seen next to a partially open door. These inlays are constructed with a range of materials including metals, shells and woods. Further up the neck, position markers are abalone dots at the bass edge of the fingerboard.
There is also a engraved, monogrammed heel cap reading L M in a block shadow font. For hardware, tuners are the original Schaller M6 set. There are no installed electronics.
This is a beautiful example of William Laskin's work, and also plays well. Its baritone voice is massive - rich, full and well developed throughout the range.
Presently 23 years old, this William Laskin 'Film Noir' Baritone guitar is in very good, clean condition with very light wear.
The original black Calton case is included.
