Here we're looking at a Weber Hyalite A-Style mandolin with natural matte finish built during early 2002 in Belgrade, Montana and signed by Bruce Weber.
This instrument was originally sold in October of 2002 and comes with the original Weber-branded hardshell case which contains the warranty cards, warranty acknowledgement from "Weber by Sound to Earth", truss rod and bridge adjustment tools.
This example is in good playing condition and has had some crack or impact repairs to the sides. It plays well and has a warm, full sound - ideal for melodic playing as found in Celtic and Jazz styles, distinct from Bluegrass style 'chop' rhythms.
The Weber Hyalite was first introduced around 1999 and discontinued in 2012, just before the 2013 move to Bend, Oregon as part of a company sale to Two Old Hippies Acoustic Instruments.
The Weber Hyalite model is a fairly simple A-Style design with limited decoration but using top quality components and construction practices. All solid wood, the Hyalite pairs a carved Sitka Spruce top with a carved Mahogany back. The body blocks, linings sides and neck are Mahogany, while the fingerboard, head plate, truss rod cover and Brekke bridge (a factory part, invented by Vern Brekke at Weber) are Ebony. The cast tailpiece is a Weber part, and the pearloid-button tuners are by Schaller. The fingerboard inlays are Mother of Pearl diamonds, and the headstock carries an overlay of a Celtic knot and the Weber logo.
Here's how the builder described the Weber Hyalite:
"Warm, round, inviting tone, coupled with superior playability- these are the hallmarks of our Hyalite Mandolins. Perfect for Celtic and jazz players, the Hyalite is an affordable instrument for the serious musician."
Weber Mandolin History
Weber Mandolins was formed in 1997, first as Sound to Earth LTD in or near Belgrade, Montana. In 1996 Gibson, who in 1987 had taken over Flatiron Mandolins via an offer they couldn't refuse, moved mandolin production to Nashville. Employees including Bruce Weber, Vern Brekke and others chose not to move and instead launched Sound to Earth in Weber's barn. Within a year, they moved to larger space and somewhere after 2002 changed the company name to Weber Mandolins.
