Here is a Teisco Del Ray ET-460 K4L candy apple red from 1967. Originally produced in the mid-1960s, this model was marketed in the US under various names including the Teisco (Silvertone) ET-460 and the Super Deluxe. Its notable features include 4 square pole-piece pickups on an aluminum pickguard, and a unique body contour often described as the ‘German Carve’, offering a sleek, comfortable forearm contour.
The Teisco Del Ray is often referred to as the "Shark Fin" due to its distinctive shape. The sharp horns, hooked headstock, and chrome accents make it a quintessential example of 1960s Teisco design. The bold Teisco design gained recognition for its unique aesthetics and is now highly sought after by collectors.
The company was founded in Japan in 1946 by guitarist Atsuwo Kaneko and electrical engineer Doryu Matsuda. In 1964, it was renamed Teisco Co. and by 1967 was acquired by Kawai Musical Instruments, who eventually phased out the Teisco guitar brand by the mid 70’s, using the name instead for electronic keyboards until the 1980s.
This K4L is well-built, with a vibrant metallic candy apple red finish. The condition is very good overall with some minor dings and scratches, not unusual for its age. It has a thin profile maple neck with a 4/2 headstock design. The fretboard is rosewood with 22 smaller sized frets. The body is mahogany and supports a simple Bigsby style vibrato, a fully adjustable bridge, and 4 chrome covered single coil pickups. One of the most charming aspects of this guitar is its detail in the layout of the electronics. While it appears daunting at first, it is cleverly simplistic and offers a vast array of options. Each pickup has its own on/off switch. Along with this it has a varitone switch, offering solo, rhythm and bass options, and master volume and master tone switches.
The K4L is a standout in the vintage guitar world and a nice option for fans of Japanese guitars.
