DESCRIPTION:
Built using locally sourced woods, this Sergei De Jonge OM Deep Body acoustic guitar pairs a Red Spruce top with Red Oak for the sides back and head plate, Black Walnut for the neck and body binding, Cherry for the neck binding, and Ironwood for the fingerboard and bridge. The body blocks are Maple.
The OM body shape was originally designed by the Martin Guitar company around 1929, modifying the 000 body size to allow the use of a 14-fret neck. This modification accomodated banjo players migrating to guitar. It was very successful and the OM is well known for its even tonal balance and full sound.
This Sergei De Jonge OM Deep Body guitar starts with the OM design but adds depth to the body, increasing volume and bass response. To improve access to the upper frets, it uses an 'elevated fingerboard' technique that really tapers the sides, exposing more of the fingerboard.
The choice of local woods is unique, very interesting, and produces good tonal results. The tone is rich, full and sparkling, but as this is a 'new' guitar, it hasn't been played enough to develop its voice. It plays well, and the OM size is very comfortable.
