Following in the traditions of classic American guitar building, the Santa Cruz OM Pre-War Acoustic Guitar (or OM-PW) delivers vintage style tone and playability.
Built during 2014 in Santa Cruz, California, this Santa Cruz OM Pre-War example is in overall very good shape with little wear. It's slightly customized with a '41 style' abalone rings around the rosette and the top. There are no electronics. The top is Sitka Spruce, the sides, back, and head plate are Indian Rosewood; the body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The tuners are Waverly open-gear models.
Sold with its Ameritage-built, Santa Cruz-branded hard shell case; the original warranty cards are in the pocket.
The OM-PW design dates back to the end of the 1920’s when the Martin Guitar Company introduced the Orchestra Model or OM. Very similar to the ‘OOO’ model, the key difference is in the scale length and number of frets clear of the body. The OM scale is around 25.4 inches, usually the same as the Dreadnought models, while the ‘OOO’ scale length is typically around 24.9 inches. Otherwise the bodies are the same. Crucially, the OM introduced the 14-fret neck to production guitars, a key requirement for players migrating to guitar from banjo.
The Santa Cruz OM Pre-War uses the time-tested pairing of a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides and back, and for the head plate. The neck, and body blocks are Mahogany, with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. Top and back bracing is Sitka Spruce.
Here is what the builder has to say about the Santa Cruz OM-PW Pre War Style Acoustic:
“The Pre-War Orchestra Model honors its pre-WWII predecessors with an advanced X and scalloped top bracing. This time-tested design ensures large bass response and overall volume.
Acoustic Guitar Magazine has placed it as one of the most important instruments of the last 20 years. The OM/PW is presented with understated appointments to emphasize master grade materials, tone and workmanship. It is perfect for the aficionado that loves the advantages of a professional boutique instrument without the cost of rare wood and ornamentation.
The OM’s versatility and ergonomics lend great appeal for traditional picking styles and impressive rhythm work. Expect the predominant bass and throaty presence of the surviving pre-war antiques.”
