The Ramirez 1a classical guitar has been at the top of the concert guitar range since its introduction in the 1960s. This example dates to 1974, built in Madrid at the Concepcion Jeronima No. 2 shop. It plays well with a concert action of 8/64ths treble and 10/64ths bass.
The Ramirez 1a, now known as the 'Tradicional', is built with a German spruce or, in this case, red cedar top and Indian Rosewood back, sides, bridge and headplate, Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) neck and ebony fingerboard. The scale length has varied over the years; currently it is 650mm but in this case, the scale is 664mm. The longer scale length increases the string tension and the guitar volume. This example has a relatively wide 2.152 inch (54.66mm) nut width. This guitar is built in the Spanish style, meaning that the sides are fitted into slots in the neck heel.
Over the years this Ramirez 1a classical guitar has required service for top and back cracks, and the front edge of the bridge has been shaved to allow for a lower saddle height. There are eight cleats installed to reinforce three repaired back cracks, the top has twelve covering five repaired cracks. All of the cleated repairs were done at The Twelfth Fret repair shop.
A non-original hard shell case is included.
Jose Ramirez II introduced the use of Red Cedar for guitar tops in the early 1960's, with it entering the catalog by 1965. This was in response to supply issues with German Spruce, and also because Cedar tops develop their voice much more rapidly than Spruce.
