This new Pattison Whyte Laydie Style 5-string Open Back Banjo dates to late 2025 and is very nicely built.
Construction and Materials
As the name suggests, this Pattison Whyte Laydie centers around a Rickard-made , 18 bracket Whyte Laydie style tone ring, central to many classic banjo sounds.
The 11 inch rim is Curly Maple with Walnut caps. The neck is also Curly Maple, with a Cherry center strip and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard. The head plate and truss rod cover are Walnut. The inlay set is Mother of Pearl. Tuners are by Gotoh and are very good. The tailpiece is a Rickard R40 model and the bridge is a compensated part by Pattison. There are two co-ordinator rods and a double-action truss rod.
The finish is a light oil and wax that feels as good as it looks, and can be easily maintained.
Sold without case, but we have a selection of hard shell cases and gig bags available.
About the Whyte Laydie Tone Ring
The Whyte Laydie tone ring design, involving a brass hoop supported on a scalloped tone ring, was patented by the Fairbanks company in 1890 as the 'Electric' tone ring. With some modifications it became very popular in the 1901 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie line. These banjos were so popular that the 'Electric' name was forgotten. Another part of the name comes from the use of unstained Maple, giving an almost white appearance. In 1904, fire devastated the woefully under-insured Fairbanks plant and the remains were sold for $926 to the Vega company. Vega continued to produce Whyte Laydie open-back banjos throughout the 1920's and into the early 1930's.
