Debuting at the Spring 1979 NAMM Show and built until 1991, the Music Man Sabre Bass pairs an Ash body with a Maple neck and introduces active electronics.
It looks like it's taking cues from the Fender Precision bass - and for good reason. Music Man was founded in 1972 by George Fullerton, Tom Walker and Leo Fender, and the Sabre bass was the two-pickup version of the StingRay Bass.
This example dates to 1979 and was built in Fullerton, California. It is in overall good condition with a notable dark blemish on the back of the neck. This blemish is not a burn as there is no texture damage to the finish, so it must have reacted to something the bass's neck rested against. Eyes closed and hands run up and down the neck, the mark is undetectable.
Fret wear is light and the body and neck finishes are in good condition, aside from the dark marking. The headstock is a 3+1 format, making the high G less of a reach, shortening the overall length of the bass and reducing weight at the head, improving balance. The bridge is a Music Man rear-loading design. The foam is gone from the integrated mutes, as often happened.
Controls include treble and bass boost / cut knobs and master volume. The switches include a three-way pickup selector, then two position bright and phase switches, and the preamp delivers a low-impedance signal that reduces loss in longer cable runs.
The original rectangular black hard shell case is included, and is in good condition.
Music Man was founded by Tom Walker, Forrest White and Leo Fender during early 1972 under the name Tri-Sonix, with Fender as a silent partner due to his non-competition agreement with CBS. When that agreement expired in 1975, the company was renamed Music Man. The instruments themselves were produced by the new CLF Research company. This arrangement lasted until 1979, when internal disputes split the two companies, and Music Man struggled for several years. In 1984, a sale took place and the new (and current) Ernie Ball Music Man company was formed; this has gone on to good success over the years.
