Introduced in 1918 as their first ukulele model, the Martin Style 1 Soprano Ukulele was built with few modifications until 1965. This model is built with Mahogany for the body and neck with Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge, and small pieces of Ebony for the nut and saddle. The position markers are small Mother of Pearl dots.
Over the years, changed included a shift in 1927 from Rosewood friction tuners to the patent pegs seen here, in 1932 the use of the Martin logo decal seen here; and in 1934, now-standard 'T' frets instead of bar frets, and in the same year dark plastic binding with one purfling layer. A Koa version, the Style 1 K, was offered from 1920 to 1942, with the same changes.
Between 1934 and end of production in 1965 very few other changes were made, though there are some slight variations in areas like the shape of the bridge; comparing this one with images of others, we've decided on a date somewhere in the 1950's.
This Martin Style 1 Soprano Ukulele example is in overall very good, clean condition with minimal wear.
Sold with a Martin ukulele case of an earlier type, a 'Trap Door' fabric style discontinued in the 1930's.
