This Martin SS-OM42-14 Sinker Mahogany guitar is number 6 of 25 built for the 2014 Nashville Guitar Show. Often, the 'SS' in a guitar name indicates 'Short Scale' but in this case, it means 'Show Special'.
The term ‘Sinker’ generally means that the wood in question is essentially salvaged from the bottom of rivers. During logging transport the densest logs occasionally break free, sink and might not be recovered for long periods of time, in some cases a century or more.
The Martin SS-OM42-14 Sinker Mahogany Show Special draws from the 2012 limited edition D-42 Sinker Mahogany model. It pairs an Adirondack Spruce top with tropical Sinker Mahogany for the sides and back, Mahogany for the neck, body blocks and linings, Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge, Madagascar Rosewood for the headplate, heel cap, binding, and end piece. he finish is gloss Nitrocellulose lacquer with an Oak Toner Burst shading. Unlike original OM models, the teardrop shaped faux-tortoise pickguard is glued to the finish rather than the top, preventing a previously characteristic top crack.
For inlays, Paua shell purfling surrounds the top, follows the fingerboard tag and is the center section of the 'Style 45' rosette. The fingerboard has 'Style 45' inlays and the headstock an Abalone Pearl Torch. The '14' in the model name represents a 14-fret neck, one of the major changes with the 1930 release of the original Orchestra Models; previously, almost all guitars had 12-fret necks. The tuners are excellent Gotoh-made gold-plated open gear models with Martin logos engraved on the buttons. There are no installed strap pins, and the tail pin is not installed (commonly done to prevent damage); it is in the case.
This guitar is in excellent condition with virtually no signs of wear. It has a wonderfully rich and sparkling tone with sufficient volume and as it appears to not have any significant playing time, should develop its voice with use.
The original Slate Grey Martin hard shell case is included.
