The Martin D-41 Dreadnought Centennial commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first Dreadnought guitars, built by Martin for the Charles H. Ditson company. For this anniversary, a number of Dreadnought models were produced in limited numbers.
Named for what was then the largest warship ever built - the 1906 HMS Dreadnought - the first Martin / Ditson Dreadnoughts were so large and produced so much bass that it might have been marketed as a bass guitar. With the design worked out in 1916, these models were produced in small numbers from 1917 to 1930. In 1934, the now ubiquitous D body entered regular production, influencing virtually all other steel string guitar builders.
This Martin D-41 Dreadnought Centennial was built in the second half of 2016 at Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It is in very good, clean condition with light wear, mostly visible as light brush marks to the pickguard - it has been played! The finish and frets have no appreciable wear, and the action is good with plenty of saddle above the bridge top. As is the case for most Martins, the model designation and serial number are stamped on the neck block, visible through the sound hole. This one has the Martin logo with D-41 underneath, the serial number 2038901 and then the words 'Dreadnought Centennial'.
As a modern D body guitar, the Martin D-41 Dreadnought Centennial pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides back and head plate. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The '41' style was introduced in 1969, and features body, neck and head binding with Abalone purfling around the top and rosette, plus Abalone for the vertical Martin headstock logo and hexagonal position markers. The bridge pins also have Abalone dots. The tuners are gold-coloured, Martin-logo sealed models. This is an all-acoustic model with no installed electronics.
The original molded Martin-branded hard shell case is included.
