This Martin D-28 Martin D-28 Brazilian Rosewood Natural was built during November of 1954 at Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Brazilian Rosewood for the sides, back and headplate. The body blocks and neck are Honduran Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and unbound fingerboard. The finish is original, with plenty of wear to the top. The tuners are the original Kluson 'Waffle Back' models with nickel plating.
Overall this guitar is in good working order, plays well and has a full, rich and well developed voice. It definitely has the look of a guitar that's been used for over half a century.
Over the decades this guitar has been used as intended, and has had all its necessary work including a re-fret, recent neck reset and fret dress, pickguard replacement, and cleated crack repairs to the sides. There is some deterioration of the binding and heel cap. An L. R. Baggs I-Beam active pickup system has been added to the bridge plate, with a small volume control under the bass side of the soundhole, 9v battery pack on the neck block, and an end-pin jack.
A fairly new black Superior brand arched top hard shell case is included.
The Martin D-28 is one of the best known, iconic instruments from the twentieth century, over that time used in almost all genres except classical and flamenco. Its roots are in the initial Dreadnought models built during WW1 for the Oliver Ditson company, though the 'D' body models did not come into regular production until 1931. In that year, the Mahogany bodied D-18 and Rosewood bodied D-28 models were launched. From 1931 to 1934, these had 12-fret necks; in 1934 both models were altered for 14-fret necks, which also moved the bridge, and this design is still in use as the basis for the largest number of steel-string acoustic guitars.
