This is one of 259 Martin 000-28K Authentic 1921 Koa Steel String Acoustic guitars built during 2014. This spectacular guitar is based on a 1921 model held by the Martin Museum. Constructed with Hawaiian Koa for the top, back and sides, this historically derived model uses a 12-fret mahogany neck with slotted headstock.
The fingerboard and bridge are Ebony, with Spruce used for the bracing. Like the originals, this has no adjustable truss rod. The slotted peghead significantly increases string downbearing on the nut without requiring a steeper headstock angle.
This beautiful guitar is in very good, clean and all original condition with only the slightest wear. While it sounds quite good as is, it appears to have been hardly played so its voice has not fully developed, and that will come with use.
The original black Martin hard shell case is included.
Most of Martin's pre-1930 guitars, indeed most guitars built by anyone to that point, used 12-fret necks. This placed the bridge close to the vibrating center of the top. But around 1929, prominent banjoist and band leader Perry Bechtel asked Martin to produce a guitar with a 14-fret neck. Banjos tend to have nearly unrestricted access to all frets, and as banjo players migrated to guitar increased access was highly desired. The guitar delivered for Bechtel was the OM or Orchestra Model, using a '000' size body modified to accomodate a 14-fret neck. At the same time, Martin put the 'D' body into production, using ideas developed around 1916 for the Ditson company. While the very first 'D' series models were 12-frets, they were quickly revised for 14-fret necks and most other models and other builders followed suit.
