Here we're looking at Lyon And Healy Washburn Style C mandolin likely dating to around 1924 given the 'Deco' headstock and the absence of the 'Aristocrat 5282' designation on the label. Unfortunately more precise dating is very difficult due to a lack of records.
The Lyon and Healy Washburn Style C mandolin first appeared around 1917 along with the fancier styles A and B - the C was the plainest, what we would now call an oval hole A style design. A patented pickguard was attached in late 1918, with a stamp reading 'pat. 11-12-18'. The 'Style' models were renamed around 1925 with the Style A becoming the "Deluxe No. 5283" and the Style C the "Aristocrat 5282"; the two-point Style B was discontinued and not renamed.
At just around a century old, this Washburn Style C mandolin is in good physical and playing condition. Following the wild success of Orville Gibson's merging of violin technologies into guitar and mandolin designs, the Style C features a carved Sitka Spruce top, carved Birds-Eye Maple back, Maple sides, with Mahogany for the neck and body blocks. The headplate, bridge and fingerboard are Ebony, and the 'plastic' bits are celluloid.
The body joins the neck at the 9th fret and counting the fingerboard extension, there are 24 frets.
At least three different headstock designs were used. The example here uses the 1920's 'Deco' shape. Earlier, around 1919 a 'Stairstep' design was used and later a much simpler one. Tailpieces also varied - early Style A and B's had an elaborately stamped model, while the plainer Style C had a much simpler part.
These mandolins were built into the 1930's, after Lyon & Healy moved out of the fretted instrument market and sold the Washburn name.
Sold with a non-original hard shell case.
