DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful ten-course Renaissance-style lute (c.1600) features 19 strings and modern nickel silver frets in place of traditional gut, offering durability without sacrificing historical charm. Strung in 2021 to the specifications of Toronto-based lutenist Lucas Harris, the instrument is fitted with premium Aquila copper-wound and New Nylgut strings.
The lute bears the Larrivée brand but is almost certainly the work of esteemed Canadian luthier Michael Schreiner, built on contract for Larrivée in the 1970s. Schreiner himself informally confirmed the attribution based on photos shown to him in 2020. That same year, the lute was expertly serviced by renowned builder and technician Wilma Van Berkel of Western University, ensuring its structural and acoustic excellence.
Complete with a bespoke hard case, stand, and three spare chanterelles (19th string), the lute is in excellent condition, stable, clean, and fully ready to play. A rare and elegant instrument, it awaits a new home where it will be cherished and regularly played.
