Built in Oxnard, California, the Larrivee OMV-60 uses an OM (Orchestra Model) sized body with a rounded Venetian cutaway, with the '60' indicating the Rosewood Traditional Series.
Condition and Construction
This Larrivee OMV-60 dates to Feb 26, 2003 and is in very good, clean condition showing only a few small dings and dents.
As a Series 60 instrument, the Larrivee OMV-60 pairs a herringbone-purfled Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back and head plate. The body is bound with Flame Maple. The body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany, while the bridge and bound fingerboard are Ebony. The rosette features an Abalone ring and there is a 'teardrop' shaped faux-tortoise pickguard on the finish. The tuners are engraved open gear models and work quite smoothly.
The finish is clear gloss with a slight amber hue due to age, and is in very good condition with only very light wear.
Sold with a non-original hard shell, Dreadnought sized case.
Model History
The OM or Orchestra Model body design was originally developed in 1929 by the Martin guitar company. At that time, banjo players were beginning to migrate to guitar, but were finding that 12-fret guitar necks were too limiting. At the request of popular bandleader Perry Bechtel, Martin altered the 000 body to accommodate a 14-fret neck. This had the effects of 'squaring' the upper bouts and shifting the bridge towards the soundhole. The OM also winds up with a scale length of 25.4 inches vs 24.9 for the 000; the higher tension of the longer scale length provides more volume and sustain.
The OM has gone on to become one of the most successful of Martin's designs outside of the Dreadnought 'D' body models. Eric Clapton's use of a vintage OM for his 1992 'Unplugged' show rekindled major interest in Martin guitars and especially in the OM for fingerstyle playing.
Here is Larrivee describing the Traditional Series:
"Our Traditional Series was created with two things in mind. Create an instrument with traditional 'vintage' features like a flat-top headstock, hand-carved volute, and diamond inlays. But at the same time maintaining the unique tonal balance of the standard Larrivée symmetrical parabolic bracing system. An enlarged soundhole allows significantly greater mid-range punch, emphasizing the low end, and increasing overall volume. This 60 Series features our highest grade Rosewood, herringbone trim, traditional angled bone nut, and available in custom vintage Tobacco Sunburst finish top. The casted bronze open-back tuners feature engraved design work by Wendy Larrivée. One of the many fine details that put this series in a category of their own."
