Here is an very early Larrivee Classical Guitar from 1970-71, built in Toronto likely before either of his first apprentices, Sergei de Jonge and Grit Laskin, had joined him. The label does not include a year but other details of the guitar show strong indications that Larrivee was still working with Edgar Monch.
Construction and Condition
This guitar pairs a German Spruce top with Indian rosewood for the sides, back head plate and bridge. The top purfling and rosette feature what was once a green layer, another Monch influence, but this has faded to almost gold. Another Monch influence is the linings, a layer that forms a ledge supporting the seam between the sides and the top and back. The back linings are solid basswood, the top linings are kerfed Mahogany. The body bocks and neck are Honduran Mahogany, with the neck joint being a faux-slipper heel dovetail. The fingerboard is Ebony.
The guitar is in good overall shape but does show the signs of regular use consistent with its age, but that use has had the result of a fully developed, well balanced tone.
There are a few spots of wear that have gone through the finish and there are some dings and dents. There is one professionally repaired back crack.
This lovely sounding guitar shows off the early work from Larrivee guitars that hints at the continued success that they would enjoy.
Sold with a non original molded hard-shell case.
