DESCRIPTION:
The Lakewood M-53 Custom Grand Concert steel string guitar comes from the Lakewood Custom Shop in Giessen, north of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Lakewood was founded in 1986, and has since produced over twenty thousand instruments.
Here we’re looking at a Lakewood M-53 Custom, with a Grand Concert body built using a AAAA grade German Spruce top and Cocobolo for the back, sides, rosette and head plate. The body blocks and slotted-peghead, 13-fret joint neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard; the binding is Maple and on this guitar, there are a pair of Mother of Pearl Maple Leaf inlays at the twelfth fret.
Lakewood offers many options, and as seen here on this Lakewood M-53 Custom, a few things stand out. First, the use of Cocobolo for the back and sides. Cocobolo, like the Brazilian Rosewood it can resemble, is a member of the Dalbergia genus and is sourced from Central and South America and delivers a warm, rich tone. Second, the slotted peghead allows greater downbearing – string pressure – at the nut on open strings, without increasing either the tip-back angle of the headstock or the risk of breakage.
Finally, this guitar’s neck joins the body at the thirteenth fret, rather than the typical fourteenth or twelfth. Fourteen fret necks were originally introduced at the request of players transitioning from banjos, where every fret was accessible. Having the join at the twelfth or thirteenth fret helps place the bridge closer to the vibrating center of the top.
This Lakewood M-53 Custom is an excellent instrument and is in very good, clean condition and has very little wear or playing time. This guitar is built to be strung with light gauge strings only.
