This Juan Miguel Carmona Flamenco Blanca guitar was built in Granada, Spain during 2012. It follows the Granada style with a smaller, lighter built body and lightly braced top producing a brighter percussive sound output when compared to guitars from other areas like Madrid. It also incorporates modern technical advancements such as conventional geared tuning pegs, a 12-hole tie block and an extended sliding saddle for quick action height adjustments.
This guitar has been used as intended over the years with some of the wear that physical playing styles like Flamenco can present. The bass edge of the sound hole is worn past the finish, the treble into the finish and on the back bass lower bout the finish is worn from contact with the player. It does play well, and has a fully developed sound with plenty of clarity and projection.
For materials, the top is Spruce and is very lightly braced with a total of six fan and two cross braces plus one larger cross brace under the fingerboard.
Being a 'Blanca' model, following tradition the sides and back are Cypress, and the back also has a center section of Indian Rosewood. The back has solid linings, the top linings are kerfed. The curved neck block suggests that the neck joint is a tenon or dovetail rather than the traditional 'slipper foot' style where the sides fit into slots of the heel.
The neck is Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata, neither Spanish or Cedar) using an Indian Rosewood head plate, backstrap and Ebony fingerboard. The bridge is Indian Rosewood, with a bone surface covering the 12-hole tie block. The rosette is a series of rings, possibly Indian Rosewood. The tuners are high quality, gold colour with black buttons.
Departing from traditional aesthetics, the headstock has a decoration - the maker's last name 'Carmona' formed into a stylized guitar shape.
The finish is a French Polish, very light to minimize restrictions on the guitar's vibrations, and there are two Golpe plates plus a small thin plate behind the tie block to prevent string ends from damaging the top or finish.
A Cibeles rigid foam case is included, and offers good protection against bumps and temperature changes.
A native of Granada, Juan Miguel Carmona was born during 1960 and in 1974 began an apprenticeship with one of the prominent Granada school luthiers, Manuel Lopez Bellido. He went on to work with Antonio Duran and Antonio Reinoso, and finally with Rafael Moreno Rodriguez. He opened his own guitar studio in 1982.
