Here we have a Jose Romero Flamenco Negra classical guitar, hand built at Romero’s Madrid workshop during 1996.
Jose Romero was born during 1954 in Baeza, closer to Granada than Madrid, but his family soon moved to Madrid. Jose began work at the Ramirez workshop in 1968 at the age of fourteen and by eighteen had been promoted to junior craftsman. After serving Spain’s compulsory military service, Romero returned to Ramirez and stood for Master Craftsman exams and worked in that role for another eight years. In 1983, he left Ramirez to found his own shop, still at Espoz y Mina St 30, near Puerta del Sol. He now focuses on Flamenco guitars.
This Jose Romero Flamenco Negra example is signed and dated to 1996, and combines a Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back sides headplate and bridge. The Rosewood set used for the sides and back has a more pronounced figure due to being flat-sawn rather than quarter-sawn. As traditional on this type of instrument, the neck is Cedro – Spanish Cedar – with Ebony for the fingerboard. The bridge has had a 12-hole conversion, a subtle change that helps improve downbearing at the saddle in that the knot does not pull the string ‘up’. This guitar is built in the Spanish style, meaning that the sides slot into the neck’s heel block. On this guitar, the finish has a slight milky cloudiness, often caused by excess humidity during the finish process. It is entirely cosmetic with no impact on tone or durability.
Traditionally, Flamenco Blanca guitars are built with Cypress for the sides and back. Cypress is a very light weight, bright and percussive sounding wood. Modern Flamenco Negra guitars on the other hand, often use Rosewood or substitutes to provide a louder, warmer tone and these guitars are often used outside the strict ‘Flamenco’ style.
This guitar is in overall good clean condition and is set up for Flamenco playing – a low action which implies a certain amount of string rattle as they are played briskly.
A hard shell case is included.
