The Ibanez SA-100 Thinline, introduced in 1977 as the company moved away from outright copies, was an excellent semi-hollow model built until 1982 with a few changes during its production run. This is essentially a 1978 model, with 1979 changes appearing soon after this example shipped.
This Ibanez, in good condition dates to April of 1979 and was built at the Terada plant, where many of the best models are still made. This great SA-100 features a Birch body with Maple center block, laminate Maple neck with Ebonized (black stained) Indian Rosewood fingerboard, Super 80 pickups, Quick Change stop tailpiece with Gibraltar Bridge, Smooth Tuner II tuners and the original electronics - in particular, the box-style pickup selector. Fret wear is light to moderate while the finish has a few small dings and light buckle rash. The original black three-layer pickguard is missing.
The case is the only non-original inclusion - the original cases were not as high quality as the instruments. Here a more recent TKL 'Case Made in Canada' flat-top and back black thinline case is included, and it is in good condition.
At introduction, the 1977 model used a trapeze tailpiece, replaced with a 'Quick Change' stop tailpiece in 1978. The 'Tulip' headstock shape (based on a Guild design as Ibanez moved away from the Gibson 'open book' that generated the famous 'lawsuit') was used for two years, and in mid 1979 the interim 'Tulip' headstock shape was mostly replaced by the uniquely Ibanez design still in use. That said, the 'Tulip' shape was still used into the 1980's on some then-current models including the Lee Ritenour and the FG-100.
These 1978 - 1979 models also sported Super 80 'Flying Finger' pickups, identifiable by the sealed pickup covers with a stamped butterfly - winged finger stamp. The body was Birch laminate with Maple center block and Gibraltar bridge, laminate Maple neck with bound Ebonized Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard, and Smooth Tuner II tuners. The label is signed, though there's no indication by who. Two finishes were available - BS for 'Brown Sunburst' and CH for 'Cherry'.
In mid 1979, the SA-100 was replaced by the AS-100. At first the changes were limited to the model designation (AS vs SA) the new headstock shape and Super 70 pickups. By late 1979, the body design also changed with sharper cutaways and Mahogany replacing Maple for the neck. For 1981, pickups changed again to Super 58s and for the final year 1982, back to Super 70's. These instruments were discontinued in 1982.
