This very good condition Ibanez AM-50 Artist Compact Thinline BS (for Brown Sunburst) example dates to June 1983 and was built at the FujiGen plant in Matsumoto, Nagoya Japan. Two indicators of FujiGen production are the F serial number prefix and the term 'Crafted in Japan' below the serial number, in place of 'Made in Japan' used by Terada.
These are great guitars, and illustrate how good Japanese production could be - and still is.
Introduced in 1982 as part of the the 'Artist Stagemaster' series, the Ibanez AM-50 was a thinline semi-hollow with compact body, very much like the later 2007 Gibson ES-339. The two designs are so similar that it's reasonable to suspect that in a reversal, Gibson took design cues from Ibanez!
The AM-50 Artist Stagemaster features a figured Maple laminate body with Maple center block, laminate Maple neck with Indian Rosewood fingerboard, Super 58 pickups, Quick Change stop tailpiece with Gibraltar II bridge, Smooth Tuner II tuners and the original electronics - in particular, the box-style pickup selector.
The pickups have been rotated 180 degrees, likely to provide a bit more warmth from the bridge pickup and a bit more brightness from the neck pickup. Fret wear is light to moderate while the finish has very light wear. The original V-shaped 'Dead End' strap buttons have been replaced with Schaller locking buttons, and the strap fittings are mounted on a strap, in the case.
The label has a signature in blue ballpoint pen, but it's unclear whose signature it is.
The case is the original arched top model with some separation of the black covering. The hinges and latches all work, and the case contains the strap.
