The Guild Bluegrass F47 Steel String Acoustic Guitar, here seen as a 1973 model, is based on what's currently referred to as a 'Grand Orchestra' body shape, with solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. The neck is Guild's typical three-piece neck - two mahogany sections with a slim center maple strip. This design helps keep the neck stable and twist-resistant. The slightly longer scale (25.59 inches or 650mm) fingerboard and bridge are rosewood and the headstock features the traditional mother of pearl 'Chesterfield' logo.
As With Many Guild Models, It's Not A Quiet Guitar
The finish of this Guild Bluegrass F47 shows expected wear, with pick marking around the soundhole and a few other marks on the top. At the time this guitar was made (and for some companies until recently), it was common practice to glue the pickguard directly to the top, rather than to the finish. This very frequently resulted in cracks in the top near the pickguard, and there is such a crack along the inner edge of the pickguard. The top has a repaired and cleated crack in the upper treble bout at the outside edge of the pickguard.
The guitar is in solid structural condition. A new bridge sub plate has been added and the guitar set up by The Twelfth Fret repair shop. It has recently had a neck reset and setup, plays very well and sounds great.
As with many Guild models, it's not a quiet guitar. It is a Bluegrass model after all, meant to be played with banjos and mandolins. The neck is a bit narrower than many modern guitars, which to my hands makes it a bit easier to play. I'm finding it a very comfortable and fun guitar to hold and play.
This Guild Bluegrass F47 is sold with its original hard shell case.
Introduced in 1963, the Guild Bluegrass F47 model was aimed at the exploding folk and bluegrass boom. In 1966, production moved from Hoboken NJ to Westerly RI. In 1972, the year before this guitar was built, Guild's President Alfred Dronge was killed in a plane crash and was succeeded by Leon Tell.
