Here we're looking at a Gretsch G6128 Duo Jet electric guitar built dated to early 1998 and built by Terada at Nagoya, Japan; Terada still builds many of the Pro-Line Gretsch models.
This Duo Jet has a number of Baldwin styling features particularly the wider headstock and slimmer neck profile and hump-block position markers. It's in very good, clean and all original condition with negligible wear to the finish and frets. It plays well and cleanly. This version of the Jet sports Filter 'Tron pickups, sealed Gretsch branded tuners, and the classic G-cut tailpiece. This particular adjustable bridge,on a Rosewood base, is peculiar to these few years predating the arrangements between Gretsch and FMIC.The top finish is gloss Black, with a moderate dark stain to the Mahogany back, sides and neck.
Traditionally, Gretsch Jet models use a Laminate Maple top on a chambered Mahogany back. Here, however, the grain visible through the naturally settling finish suggests a Spruce top, rather like a Country Club.
The original Gretsch branded hard shell case is included and contains the original Warranty cards, QC inspection card dated 1-16-98, hang tag and Filter 'Tron instruction card.
The Gretsch G6128 Duo Jet first appeared in 1954 with a chambered Mahogany body and Laminate Maple top; the neck is Mahogany with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard. Some current Jet models use a Maple neck with an Ebony fingerboard. Intended to compete with Gibson's new solidbody Les Paul model, the chambered design provides a tone profile reminiscent of the acoustic archtop models Gretsch was known for. Jets were discontinued in 1971, and were launched again in the late 1980's when Fred Gretsch III regained control of the company after the Baldwin bankruptcy.
The Jet models used the deArmond DynaSonic pickups until 1958 when the new Gretsch Filter 'Tron pickups, designed by Ray Butts, went into mass production after several years of hand construction. These predate the Seth Lover designed Gibson models and were likely the first hum-cancelling guitar pickups.
George Harrison used a deArmond equipped 1957 Duo Jet with The Beatles fom 1961 to 1963, when he shifted to a 1962 Gretsch Country Gentleman with Filter 'Trons. Malcolm Young used his double-cutaway 6131 Jet on countless AC/DC shows and recordings, and Billy Zoom relied on a Jet during his time with X.
