Godin Multi Oud Ambiance Natural, 2014 [USED]

Here we're looking at a Godin Multi Oud Ambiance in Natural High Gloss finish, built during 2014 in La Patrie Quebec.  This example is in very good condition with light wear, a very few light dents and scratches.  Introduced in 2011, Godin also renders the Multi Oud name as 'Multioud'. 

This excellent instrument is sold with its original rectangular hard shell, form fitted case. 

The Godin Multi Oud Ambiance is one of two very modern versions of an Oud - the Ambiance and the Encore. The primary differences are the woods used for the body and bridge fingerboard, and the electronics.  Both models use Mahogany for the 23.03 inch scale neck and rely on modern nylon strings. The headstock is slotted, allowing greater string pressure on the nut without increasing the head angle, and use a set of eleven classical style tuners, five on the bass side and six on the treble. 

The Ambiance uses Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata, which is neither Spanish or a Cedar and is common on Classical and Flamenco guitars), and Ebony for the bridge and fingerboard. Currently, the electronics are based on a dual-source Fishman Aura setup.  This uses a bendable mic with four imaging preamp settings blended with an undersaddle transducer. The preamp also includes feedback control and of course a tuner.  

The Encore version uses locally-sourced Laurentian Basswood for the body and Indian Rosewood for the bridge and fingerboard.  Its electronics are simpler, a Fishman Classical II with preamp.  

The Godin Multi Oud is tuned as standard (low to high): F,A,D,G,C,F.

The Multi Oud, like the very successful and useful Multiac line, is in a direct line from guitars built by Gibson at the request of Chet Atkins, the CEC (Cutaway Electric Classical Chet Atkins) and some steel string equivalents (the SST). At the time Chet was commonly using nylon string guitars in performance, but at stage volumes these had significant issues with feedback.   Gibson built a set neck, chambered mahogany body, Spruce top nylon string guitar using a six-element piezo bridge pickup with custom preamp.  These first appeared as production models in 1981 and were discontinued along with all other Chet Atkins models particularly the Country Gentleman in 2006 as Atkins endorsement contract expired. Likely not coincidentally, Gretsch regained the endorsement contract in 2007. 

Godin introduced the bolt on neck, chambered body Multiac line in 1993.  This featured a six element bridge transducer that offered not only a blend of all six elements for traditional analog output, but also electronics allowing synthesizer access.  These six individual elements also allowed transcription software to accurately render which string a note was played on. 

The Oud is a type of fretless Lute common in the Middle East, Mediterranean and sections of the African continent.  It descends from one of the oldest known stringed instruments, the Barbud.  Being fretless, it allows for microtonal and glissando playing effects. Traditional Ouds and Lutes tend to be pear shaped acoustic instruments.  The Multi Oud is as much a significant alteration to tradition as the solidbody electric guitar was to acoustic guitars, and offers the same levels of feedback prevention at higher stage volumes.  This greatly improves the instrument's practicality in larger capacity venues.
