The Godin A8 mandolin, built from 2000 to 2020, was a logical progression from the Gibson Chet Atkins CE solidbody classical guitar. These were built of Mahogany, Spruce, and Ebony though some post-2013 models may have had Richlite fingerboards. This example is a 2014 model built during October of 2013 at La Patrie, Quebec, and is in very good, clean condition with its original gig bag. Fret wear is light to moderate.
The serial number on this Godin A8 mandolin indicates 2014, but for Godin's production, a model year starts on August 1 of the previous year.
Godin's serial numbering systems are discussed at this very helpful link.
During the late 1970’s, Chet Atkins discussed a new guitar with Gibson. Atkins, along with other highly skilled players like Jerry Reed, had been playing nylon string guitars for some time, but these have real limitations at full stage volumes. They came up with the 1982 Chet Atkins CE and CEC models, which used a spruce top on a mahogany back with traditional classical guitar geometry. Steel string SST models followed. Gibson ultimately abandoned these models around 2005, while Godin Guitars dramatically improved on the concept with the Multiac and A-Series instruments.
As with all of the Godin A-Series instruments, the Godin A8 mandolin mixes traditional tone woods with modern design concepts and electronics. The two-chamber body is routed from a solid block of mahogany and capped with a solid spruce top. The top is voiced with a unique combination of X and fan bracing that produces exceptional sound and projection even when played acoustically. The neck is Mahogany with an Ebony fingerboard and a three-bolt joint.
Plugged in is where the Godin A8 mandolin truly excels. The individual RMC saddle transducers run through an RMC preamp voiced specifically for the A8. The A8 was available in two colors, Natural with a satin finish or Cognac Burst with a high gloss finish.
