The Gibson Memphis ES-339 was built from 2007 until the Gibson Memphis plant closed in 2019, and the 339 is now built in Nashville with some small changes. These are great guitars, compact and relatively light weight, and deliver all the tonal versatility that thinline ES models are capable of.
Here we’re looking at a Gibson Memphis ES-339 in Ginger Burst, dated to February 05 2016 at the Memphis plant. This example is in very good, clean condition with very light wear and light natural tarnish to the nickel-plated hardware. It sports Burstbucker humbuckers, traditional Gibson wiring, and Grover Roto-Matic tuners. It is in good, clean and orginal condition with minor play wear to the top - there's no pickguard, so the finish in that area does get some contact. Somewhat unusually, guitars from this batch have a torrefied Maple fingerboard rather than Indian Rosewood. Overall, this is a very comfortable guitar to play. It plays well, and at just over 7 pounds (3.3kg) it's very comfortable to stand and play with.
Sold with the original black Gibson-branded hard shell case containing the Certificate of Authenticity.
In 1996, Gibson launched the short-lived ES-336, a scaled-down version of the classic ES-335. This model retained the key playability elements of the 335 in terms of scale length, fingerboard width and hardware selection. However, the body size was reduced from 16 inches wide at the lower bout to 14 inches, and the length is proportionally smaller to retain the shape and contours. For the ES-339, the body width was increased by 1/4 inch. There is a third variant, the Custom Shop CS-336, introduced in 2001 and replacing the ES-336.
Another major difference between the ES-336 and ES-339 is that the ES-336 was built with “tonally carved” Mahogany, essentially a shaped and chambered block providing the sides, back and center block and Maple laminate top, while the ES-339 uses the same construction style as the ES-335, with Maple laminate back and sides and a Maple center block. For the audience, there’s hardly any visual difference between the two models.
