Here is a Gibson LG-0 acoustic guitar built in Kalamazoo, Michigan during 1968. Designed as an entry level, student model the Gibson LG-0 has a comfortable and compact smaller body compact with a midrange forward tone. Many, many people learned to play on these guitars.
Condition and Construction
The LG-0 uses a 14 inch wide, Mahogany body with faux-tortoise binding around the top, and as single thin purfling layer around the soundhole as a rosette. The original screwed-on styrene pickguard is long gone (that feature dates from 1963). Here, the tuners are Grover Sta-Tite models, replacements for the original Kluson Deluxe set.
The bridge has recently been reglued and a newer adjustable bridge has been added.
There is a significant amount of cosmetic wear but overall the guitar plays well, sounds very good for fingerstyle, and comes with a non original cardboard case.
The LG-0 mainly uses three woods: Honduran Mahogany for the top, back, sides, body blocks, linings and neck; Sitka Spruce for the top and back bracing; and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. The top is ladder braced, In addition, the bridge plate is a Maple / Poplar laminate. On some higher priced models, blackened Pearwood is used for the head plate, but here the front of the head is just painted black and the gold colour Gibson logo is applied with a stencil.
Notes about Dating
Gibson has over time reused a range of six digit serial numbers so accurate dating depends on other features.
* When the LG-0 was introduced in 1958 the bridge was rectangular.
* From 1962 until 1965, a plastic 'Belly' style bridge was used.
* In 1966 the rosewood 'belly' style with adjustable ceramic or rosewood saddle was used.
Looking up the serial number, everything prior to 1966 and after 1974 when the model was discontinued can be excluded. The serial number '879465' has only one hit in that period, during 1968. All other instances of that number are after 1968.
