The Gibson Les Paul Studio wine red electric guitar, introduced in 1983, delivers what’s needed and is one of the best values in the Les Paul lineup. This 1996 model sports a Wine Red stain under a light Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish and is in good condition with some honest play wear.
The construction and materials of the Gibson Les Paul Studio follows the established Les Paul pattern used since its 1952 introduction. The body is Mahogany with a carved Maple cap, and here the body uses a ‘modern’ weight relief pattern. Unlike higher priced models, there is no binding around the top.
The neck is three-piece Maple, rather than Mahogany, with an unbound Indian Rosewood fingerboard. The Les Paul Studio finish is Gibson’s standard Nitrocellulose lacquer, but with minimal grain filling underneath and lighter application. These changes don’t really affect tone or playability, but dramatically decrease production cost and hence retail prices.
For hardware, vintage ‘Kluson style’ Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic Keystone buttons are at the head. These work very well and are lighter than the usual Grover Roto-Matic alternative. A ‘Nashville’ style Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece are at the other end of the strings. A pair of 490 pickups – 490R (neck or Rhythm position) and 490T (bridge or Treble position) feed through standard pots and Switchcraft selector and output jack.
This 1996 Gibson Les Paul Studio plays well, has a comfortable weight, and sounds like a Les Paul. These are a great choice for anyone who needs or wants a Les Paul – and who among us does not? – but is reluctant to take a much higher priced model out to gigs, jams, or just home.
The original Gibson branded gig bag is included.
