The Gibson 1954 Les Paul Custom was introduced as a premier solid body electric guitar, building on Gibson's earlier electrified models. Under Ted McCarty's leadership, the design evolved from the Les Paul Gold Top, which featured P-90 pickups and a trapeze tailpiece, to the new Tune-O-Matic bridge paired with a stop tailpiece.

Distinctively, the 1954 Custom showcased a solid Mahogany body with a glossy black finish and multi-layer binding, giving it an elegant appearance. It featured a 'Staple Top' model 480 AlNiCo V magnet pickup at the neck, replacing the original P-90, to complement the mellower tone of the all-Mahogany body. This pickup configuration lasted until 1957 when Gibson introduced Humbuckers.

Gibson has periodically reissued the 1954 Les Paul Custom, notably as the Les Paul Custom Historic ’54 from 1991 to 2013, with some models including a factory-installed Bigsby.

This example has some cosmetic wear marks, scratches and dings on the body and some minor lacquer checking near the binding of the headstock. There is one larger dent in the back of the neck around the 3rd fret and there is some minor fret wear mostly in first position. The guitar plays well and comes with an original black hard-shell case.
