This Gibson Hummingbird Natural top acoustic guitar - Sunburst was also available - was built during 1964 at Kalamazoo Michigan and is in overall good condition. It has had some bridge work done to it that's definitely improved its sound.
The nitrocellulose lacquer finish has natural and expected wear and checking. Between the treble end of the bridge and the lower edge of the pickguard there is a section of wear into the top, most likely from the player's little finger. It appears that the guitar has also been professionally re-fretted and there is some fingernail wear to the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard in the low positions, reduced during the fingerboard levelling phase of the re-fret.
Introduced in 1960, the square-shoulder dreadnought Gibson Hummingbird guitar was just below the J-200 at the top of the Gibson Acoustic lineup. This was Gibson's first square-shoulder model, aimed to compete with Martin D bodies. During the 1960's and later the Hummingbird has been very popular with musicians including Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow and Tom Petty.
This is a very good sounding and good playing guitar with a great vintage look.
For Gibson Hummingbird construction, the top is Sitka Spruce, the sides, back, body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany. Typical of the era prior to 1966, the bound fingerboard has split-parallelogram position markers and is Brazilian Rosewood as was the original bridge; here the bridge has been replaced with a custom fitted Indian Rosewood bridge. When new, this example had Gibson's adjustable bridge with a Rosewood saddle, metal carrier bolts and the locating bolts adding quite a bit of weight to the top. The bridge replacement significantly opens up the guitar with a much clearer, brighter and more responsive tone. The classic, fairly thick hand-painted pickguard adds what Gibson sometimes refers to as 'natural compression'. At the headstock, the Gibson logo and crown inlay are Mother of Pearl. The tuners are gold plated, single-line Kluson Deluxe models with keystone buttons.
The included case is a Road Runner RRMADN ABS molded hard shell in very good condition.
On the Rolling Stones hit 'Street Fighting Man', the guitar is a Hummingbird overdriving the built-in mics on a Philips cassette recorder. The drum kit is a 'London Jazz Kit Set' that folds out of a suitcase, and the only electric instrument is the bass - also played by Richards.
