The Gibson Custom Shop Historic Collection ’56 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue is based on the the Gibson 1956 Les Paul, almost the model’s evolutionary peak after its 1952 introduction. The next step was the 1957 introduction of the 6-string version of Seth Lover's new humbucking pickups (8-string humbuckers had been installed from 1956 on some console steel guitars), narrowly beating out Ray Butt's High-Sensitive Filter 'Tron pickups for Gretsch in 1957.
By this point, the neck angle issues had been resolved, and the new ABR-1 bridge and stop tailpiece had been added – all that remained was the late 1957 introduction of Gibson’s new 6-string humbucking pickups, and new sunburst finishes on figured Maple tops.
This Gibson Custom Shop Historic Collection ’56 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue was built in Nashville during 2004, and is about as close as Gibson could legally get to the originals.
The carved top is Maple - visual grades aren't much of a factor when a solid finish is applied - on top of a Central American Mahogany body, and paired with a Mahogany neck. The fingerboard is Indian Rosewood, not Brazilian, and this is the major materials difference. The peghead veneer is black-finished Pearwood. The trapezoidal position markers are acrylic and the headstock Gibson logo is Mother of Pearl; the Les Paul Model logo is screened onto the headstock. For hardware, a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners are at head, a Tune-o-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece at the body end, and a pair of P-90 pickups with standard individual volume and tone controls.
This guitar has been played, and has light play wear in the form of minor dents and buckle rash to the finish and light fret wear.
Overall this Gibson Custom Shop Historic Collection ’56 Les Paul Goldtop reissue is in good, clean condition, and is accompanied original black Gibson Custom Shop branded hard shell case.
Here’s the builder on the Gibson 1956 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue:
“1956 was the only full year in which the Les Paul model featured the powerful P-90 pickups and the adjustable ABR-1 bridge setup, a combination that allowed the Les Paul model to intonate, sustain, and thrill like never before. This Gibson Custom Shop ’56 Reissue captures the look, feel and searing sound of an original 1956 Les Paul Goldtop in exhaustive detail, featuring all solid woods, vintage-accurate gold paint, authentic replica parts, Historic narrow/tall frets, and hot hide glue construction. “
